An ordinary meeting of the Ohrißtchuroh Oity Council was held at 7 p.m. yostorday ; present — His Worahip the Mayor, Councillors Thomson, Ayera, Kiver, Hiirns, Vmoent, Prudhoe, Lainboct, Louieeon, Bowman, Brice, aud Seeao. A letter was read from the Bon Secretary Ohnstchuroh Volunteer Fire Brigade, stating tliat Mr Superintendent Harris had tendered his resignation on account of his proposed visit to England. Several of the senior members had requested Mr Harris to take twelve months' leave of absence instead, end promised to obey any deputy who might be appointed. Mr Harris hael, however, declined, stating that it would be unfair to his successor. The Brigade had therefore con. sidered the question of recommending a suitable successor to Mr Harris, and had unanimously agreed to request the Oounoil to appoint Foreman B. W. Turton to the offioe. Councillor Hiorns moved, pursuant to notice—" That this Counoil tike into consideration the advisability of appointing an inspector of gus meters for the Oity of Cbristchurcb." Ho asserted that hia resoiution wae not intende-! aa a reflection on the Gas Compauy or any of ita officers. Weights and measures were inspected in order that tho public might be served justly, and the same thing applied to gas meters. There woro something like 3000 meters in Ohristohurch, and he believed that a vory large ovorchargo was mado annually in regard tomany of theae. He contended that the meters could not continue in good working order for so long a time aB they were required to ba Haed. He had not been able, on account of illness, to get the matter up as he would have liked, thereforo he would move that the subject should be referred to the By-law Oommittee, in eonjunstion with the mover, to consider. Oounoillor Ayera moved, aocording to notice--^" That in the opinion of this Oouncii it iB highly desirable to erect two or more waccr tanks for fire prevention purpo.es in the eastern portion of the oity, and that this matter be referred to the Fire Brigade Oommittee and the mover to report ac to the beat available cites, also to inquire what gumswould be available, either from residents or Insurance Companies, towards the coat of i he aame." Councillor Prudhoe moved, aa an am* ndment—" That the worda « the euatern portion * bo struck out." The amendment was put and lost on the voices, and the original motion aB altered aocording to Councillor Prudhoo's suggestion, wsb carried. CONGBATULATIONS TO IBITISH GOVBBNHRNT. Councillor Thomson moved -"That the Mayor and Council, on behalf of the citizens of Christchurch, desire to offer to the Jm- ' perial Government their hearty congratula- , tionß on the success of Her Majesty's fore-os , in Egypt." Ho had heen induced to bring the motion forward because the Council had been twitted with being somowhat behind. He suggested that if the motion were paaaed, the co-operation of the other City Councils of the Oolony should be requested in order to send Home a congratulatory telegram. The motion was carried nem con, the oarrying out of the resolution to be left in ' he hands of the Mayor. IATIMKB BtjUABH, Councillor Thomson moved—" That the Works Oommittee be requested to take steps to render Latimer square available for the general publio." Councillor Louisaon moved, and Oounoillor Bowman Booondcd — "That all private strata, in regard to which the Council's regulations have boen complied with, be takou over ab onco " Aftor some disoussion His Worship th© Mayor ruled tbe motion out of order, and ib was accordingly withdrawn.
