Hia Worship the Mayor has received the following letter from Commodore Erskine:— " H.M.S. Nelson, at Hobart, " March 15, 1882.

Buddenklau, Esq., "Mayor of Chrißtchurch, " Sir,— l have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of March 3, and raquest that you will convoy tn the City Council and citizens of Christchr.nrh my best thanks for the cordial invitation which they have given me to visit thoir Oolony, and for asking me to be presont at the opening of the Industrial Exhibition about to be held in your city.

" It would have been a double pleasure to> me to have made the acquaintance of the Colony of New Zealand, and at the same time to have shown tbe interest whioh tho Ni»vy takes in her welfare, by visiting Lyttelton in tho Nelson on thi» occasion of the Exhibition ; and I had fully determined to do so, but I am unfortunately obliged to return to Sydnoy shortly, and am thuß unable to carry out my original intention. "I. is soy intention, however, to dispatoh H.M.S. Miranda lo ho present at tho opening ceremony, and I ttill hope to be ablo to visit Christchurch before it closes.
