POPULAR SPORTS ASSOCIATION.

#~ — A meeting of the members of the Popular Sports Association was held at the City Council Chamber yesterday afternoon ; present — Messrß S. P. Andrews (in the chair), H. E. Alport, M. Davie, F. Hobbs, J. Bamuols, H. Crooks, — Drowett, T. S. Lambert, and F. T. Haskins (Hon Sec). Messrs George Turner and James Campbell were elected members of the Association. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Samuels to instruct the Secretary to write to the Domain Board, asking for the übo of Hagley Park, for the purpose of tho sports. The Secretary was also instructed to write to Mr Elder, the lessee of tho Park, rjquesting him to remove any stock from the ground. It was decided to communicate with the Government, suggesting the desirability of closing the publio offices on December 18, the anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. It was agreod to write to the various banks asking thorn to co-operate with the Committee in having the day observed at a holiday. Mr Drewolt, on behalf of the Ground Committee, reported that the running course had been found in somowhat bad condition. Tho grass was being cleared away and the inequalities of the ground levelled. Mr John AnderBon had promised a number of loads of cinders for the patch. Mr Andrews stated that the programme Committee recommended tbat the programme of last year's sports should be adhered to, except in a few particulars. They proposed to abolish the running long jump, to substitute a costume raco for tho lottery race, to alter the distanco in tho handicap bicycle raco from two to three mileß, to leave the tug of war opon to any team of ten men, and to introduce a Highland fling competition. lhe suggestions were agreed to. It wao resolved to call for tenders for a brass bund on the day of the sports. The question of fixing tko sites for booths was left to tho ground Committee and the Aurtioneer. Aftor some further busi ess of an unimportant character, it was decidod on the motion of Mr Lambert, to call for tenderß for printing tho programmes. Tho meeting then adjourned till 4 p.m. on Tuesday next.
