LONDON, August 22. Decline in Stocks.

Consols have declined £, and are now 99£. New Zealand securities have further declined 10s all round, to-day's quotations being as follow : — 5 per cent 10-40 loan, 104 ; 5 per cent 1889 loan, 103 ; 41 per cent 1879-1904 loan, 100£. The market rate for discount has advanced ito 2£ per cent ; the bank rate remains at 3 per cent.

Further Rise in Wheat.

Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, has further advanced ls to 565, and New Zealand wheat ex ship to 55s 6d. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, is unchanged afc 40s 6d. The English harvest operations are hindered by continued bad weather.

Martell's and Hennessy's brandy are quoted at lis 3d.

August 23. Commarcial Treaties.

In the Honse of Commons lasb night, a question was put to the President of the Board of Trade, with the view of ascertaining the intentions of Government with regard to the Anglo-French commercial treaties. In reply, the Bight Hon J. Chamberlain stated that negotiations between the French and British Governments were only suspended for a time, and he trusted that the proposals which France was shortly expected to make would allow of their resumption at an early date.

Telegrams to hand from Pretoria announce tbat considerable discontent is bsing manifested by tbe Boers generally with the convention agreed to between the Triumvirate and the Royal Commission. Strong complaints are made tbat the settlement arrived at greatly favours the Transvaal Kaffirs, and is detrimental to the interests of the Boer people.

A report is current to-day that the Hon Mr Campbell has made a donation of £10,000 towards the endowment of a new Anglican Bishopric.

Going it Bigly.

On Chong, the Chinese merchant at whose house in George street the first outbreak of small-pox occurred, has sent in a bill to Government for £2000, for losses sustained through being placed in quarantine. It is stated that Doctors Clune and Coffyn aho intend, if necessary, to sue Government for damages sustained through their detention in quarantine. The former gentleman, it is said, will claim £10,000.

BRISBANE, August 23. A Political Action.

Tbe action Miles versus M'llwraith, Premier of Queensland, to recover penalties from the latter for having, while member of the Assembly, been interested in Government contraots, bas commenced, and the evidence has been partly heaid. The defence alleges that tbe contract had terminated before Mr M'llwraith took his seat in Parliament.
