News has been received from Ireland that a large number of people assembled to-day at Tranmore, in County Waterford, to attend a meeting called by the Land League agitators. The authorities having learned that the meeting was to be held, had previously despatched a large force to the neighbourhood, and as soon as the people assembled, the police arrived on the scene and dispersed the meeting. Some resistance was offered by the mob, but no serious disturbance occurred. The Government have within the past few days had the position of affairs in Ireland under consideration. Several meetings of the Cabinet have been held to discuss the matter, and it has transpired that it has been decided that the authorities in Ireland should maintain a very firm attitude and adopt the strongest possible measures to suppress the increasing disorder. June 8. Accounts to hand to-day from Ireland continue to give further evidences of the alarming state of the country. Numerous further arrests of prominent agitators and suspected persons have been made during the past few days, under the provisions of the Coercion Act, and active steps are being taken by the authorities to stop all meetings called together by the Land League. A large number of people assembled yesterday at Mullingar, in County Westmeath, but the police were despatched to the scene. The meeting was prohibited, and the orowd dispersed. At Shrule, in County Mayo, yesterday, a serious riofc occurred between the police and the peasantry, who had assembled in large numbers to prevent an ejectment, Severe fighting took place, and seve-ral of the rioters were arrested. The mob, however, again attacked the police, and rescued their prisoners after some further conflict. News which has come to hand from Cork states that roads in the district have been destroyed, and that telegraph lines have been cut in Beveral places. A large detachment of troops has accordingly been despatched to traverse the country and to prevent further outrages. Bulgaria in a State of Siege. The relations between Prince Alexander of Bulgaria and his Parliament which have for Borne time been of an unsatisfactory character, have now become most discordant, The demands of the Prince for reforms in the system of Government have met with general opposition on the part of members of the National Assembly and of a large section of the community. Much difference of opinion exists, however, and considerable disorder prevails in the Principality, which iB now declared to be in a state of siege. Tenders for the New South Wales loan of £2,050,000, to bear interest at the rate of 4 per cent, were opened to-day. The total amount offered was found to be £4,000,000. Tendera at £10 3s 8d and upwards will receive allotment in full. SYDNEY, Juki 9. Shipping. Arrived yesterday (June 8), from Auckland. The s-.b. Ocean, with 450 Chinese from Hongkong, left Port Darwin on Monday for Sydney. ALBANY, June 9. The P. and O. Company's s.s. Cathay, with the inward Suez mail, dated London, May 6, arrived at King George's Sound to-day. NEW PLYMOUTH, Junb 9. Fatal Railway Accident. A man named George Brackenshire, who was accidentally run over by the train at Normanby yesterday, and was brought into town last night, had his right leg amputated ; bat he gradually sank, dying at half-past 12 today. TIMARU, Junb 9. The Unemployed. An adjourned meeting of the unemployed was held to-day. The men proceeded in a body to interview tho Mayor re laying water pipes. The Mayor said he could not proceed with this work until the fittings required had arrived from Home ; but meantime any man could have a job at stone-breaking if he liked. A list was tben prepared of the unemployed, Btating whether married or single, family if any, and how long out of work. Thia list Mr Turnbull, the member, promisod to tako to Wellington with him to-day, and to urge upon the Government the necessity of taking immediate steps to relievo the distress.
