OBJECTIONS TO BBNEWALB. The following are the cases in which objections to renewals were raised: —Papanui Hotel. Mr Joynt applied for a license for Messrs Sawtell and Sutherland, the owners of the property. He pointed out that the present licensee would give up possession bofore the next licensing meeting ; and this application was to prevent any lapsing of the license. Mr Thonrns applied for a renewal on behalf of Mr Amyes, and ultimately the matter was adjourned for a fortnight.—Riocarton Hotel, C. Lewis. The police called attention to the recent gambling case, whereby tho man Hulston, who had been committed for trial threw dice with one of the licensee'* sons, as to what he should receive for a dray, horse and harness, which he had borrowed. Mr Thomas said that in the matter referred to Mr Lewis h .>i been acquitted as he was absent when Iho gambling took place. Mr Wood considi red the occurrence a most scandalous one. Thia man Hulston would be imprisoned for hiß action in the matter, and the licensee of the house where he had been encouraged to commit a crime would go unpunished. It appeared to him that the house had been conducted in a most disorderly manner. He would not grant a license to Lewis, even if he had to lose his Beat on the Bench for not doing so. Tbe affair waa one of tho most disgraceful he had ever heard of. The other Commissioners"' concurred in Mr Wood's opinion. Mr Thomas said that a refusal of the license would be equivalent to fining Mr Lewis £3000 or £4000—rather a hard penalty, he considered, for such an offence. The Chairman thought it would serve him quite right to do ao. Mr Thomas thought it waa a pity the property Bhould lose the license, probably the present licensee might sell out. Would the Court adjourn the case for 14 days to see whether any arrangement could be come to in the matter ? The Bench ultimately agreed to this, and adjo'-'-oc! the caso for a fortnight for final decui The applicat wm for renewals of wine and beer licenses fr ■" F. Boot, E. Brinkman, 3. H. Stringer, olombo s'rect, and G. P. Kissel, Temple tun, were adjourned for a fortnight, to enable the police to see that the accommodation at the respective houses was improved to their eatiifaction.
