SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNOIL.

TO THB BDITOB OV THB STAB. Sib, — Allow me a small space in your paper, in order to make a few remarks on the doings of this Council at their last night's meeting as reported by the Star. lam very much mistaken if the action that those Councillors took who voted for a Is in £1 rate does not tend to their injury, particularly the two ef them — the mover and seconder — of that objectionable rate. They surely must have forgotten that they are depending still on the public for support, and that if onoe the tide of popular opinion was to set against them their position would be in danger. Thoir actions will tell against them at the election in September next. The ratepayers will remember them, but it will be with distrust. It appears that there ia a clique in the Council that carries everything their own way. Now, it is fully timo that the props were knocked from under them, and thia compact get flattened out. Tho wisest man the world ever saw said, " That the righteous man conaidereth the cause of tho poor, but tho wicked aeeketh not to know." Whero shall wo look for the motive that hath actuated these men to act liko this ? Can it bo obstinacy ? They know full well that they are taking from tho poor ratepayer that which ho can so ill afford at present, when times aro so hard. But how shall we view those two Councillors, Messrs White and Forrester, who tried lo get a ninepenny rate. Their actions will alao be remembered, but it will bo with different feelings from the iormer. It will be with sentiments of respect and confidence. Tho aotions of these two will be indelibly written on the memories of the ratepayers of Sydenham. — I am, Sec, A RATEPAYER.
