COURSING.

NEW ZEALAND WATERLOO CUP MEETING. First Day. Favoured by Queen's weather the Canterbury Coursing Club commenced the firsfc round of the Waterloo Cup, which closed with 46 entries, on the property of Mr Minchin, in the vicinity of Sheffield. A start was made about 1 p.m., after the arrival of the Christchurch truin, and by tho time the first brace of dogs was handed to the slipper fully 200 spectators, nearly all horsemen, had assombled. The going was good, being all grass, but at first hares came slowly to hand and a number were lest. Mr Wise, as usual, was very happy in his judgments in spite of tho difficulty in deciding upon the merits of such a fine lofc of dogs. Turner, also, was very successful in his efforts with the slips. We are indebted to a friend for the folio wing particulars of fche trials : — first round. From a good slip, Beaconsfield scored firsfc turn by about a length, hi 3 brother then gofc placed and kepfc selfish possession for Borne good points ; they then exchanged, and Beaconsfield drove the hare through the fence, where Don Carlos killed. Kip led up and both went over a sod fence, the remainder of the course nofc being seen, verdict for the Southland dog. Blue Bell led Guy and scored first three turns, then placed Guy, but immediately went past and won a good course in hollow fashion, finishing with a kill. Pauline beat Lockwood almost pointless. Gyp and Rhododendron were in slips a long time before a hare was found, and from a very long slip the latter led up by a number of lengths, scoring freely till they reached a road, where Gyp got placed, but could not wipe out her opponent's score. Little Queen was first up by aboufc four lengths, and took first turn, driving through a gorse fence, Aster followed, and her rival hung at the fence for some time, ultimately jumping it. In the meantime, Aster was busy until puss gofc away, Little Queen failing to get on terms. A good trial followed between Petrea and Riot, but the former always had the foot of the Dunedin dog, and won well. Kathleen easily bowled over another "flower," the latter dying away badly towards the finish. A give and take course followed between Lancashire Lass and Justinian, the daughter of Donald and Hinemoa, Becuring the judge's verdict. Reflection, with a grand hare, scored first and second, and then placed Lufra, who had about balanced points, when the blue went to the fore, and just managed to win. A beautiful trial followed between Skiddaw Lass and Magic, in which both ran remarkably well, the former winning with very little to spare. The " demon " hare of the day was found for Jeanette and Lancashire Lad. The hitch led, and scored several points before the Lad gofc in for aboufc three points ; they then exchanged, and Jeanette went to the front, but ultimately the hare went right away from them. Encore "easily beat Young Ridley, the hare escaping. Some time previous to being placed in slips with Malice, Papanui got away from her leader ; and was very severely run, single handed, when slipped with the Oamaru slut the latter led, and did a lot of work, until they drove the hare through a gate, where the judge's horse shied. In the meantime Papanui had commenced to score, but tbey both went out of view of the judge, who decided in favour of the Claverhouse bitch. Balmoral and Billiards were a short time in slips, but no hare being found, tho day's proceedings were brought to a close. Hares appear to be numerous, and should the weather hold good, Friday nighfc ought to see the finish. Second Day.
