ROAD BOARDS.

RICCARTON. The ordinary meeting of this Board was hell on Monday, at the office, Upper Riccarton ; present — All the members, and Mr H. J. Hall, Chairman. Tho following correspondence was read:— From Mr Derrett, requesting permission to tako 12 loads of gravel from the reserve for the Papanui echoed ground. Grantod conditionally. — From the Rev C. Turrell, enclosing letter from Mr Balluntjnc, suggesting the advisability of cutting off tho sharp corner of section 85, at the junction of the Middleton road. The Board approved of the suggestion, but could take no action until Iho laud was dedicated to the public— From Mr Triggs, pointing out tho necessity of better drainage on Wright's road. Referred to the Surveyor, with power to act. — From Mr Washbourn, asking upon what terms tho Board would tako over the streets in the township of Newmarket. It was resolved — "Thafc the streets laid off through Mr Washbourn's land (rural section No. 10) be taken over by the Board when dedicated to the public free of cost, and formed to the Board's satisfaction." — From Mr Wynn, requesting an oxtension of time for tho completion of his contraot at Addington. Tho Board granted six weeks. — From Messrs Bowen, Hanson and others, asking tliat a footpath be mado along the Middleton Junction road. It was resolved to reply thafc the Board regrets it cannofc afc present comply with tho request. — From Mr J. Beaumont, requesting permission to dedicate the road lately formed by him through rural sectton No. 80. Ifc was resolved to accept the road when dedicated to the public freo of cost.— From Mr T. W. Stringer, asking the Board to form the road leading from the Fendaltown road to his property. The Board decided to comply with the request. — From Mr Triggs, asking for any surplus soil which the Board may have to spare on the roads intersecting the township of Newmarket. The Surveyor was dirocted to inform Mr Triggs that at present it was impossible to say what quantity of sod there would bo available. — Krom the Solwyn County Council in reply, declining to vest the land lately purchased in the district in the Road Board ; also, from the Government on tho same Bubject. Tho Chairman was directed to reply. — From the Tempieton Road Bomi, re maintenance of boundary roads, and suggesting a conferono at their office on June 17, with a view to arriving at. an amicable arrangement as to what portion of the boundary roads should be under the management of each hoard. Ifc was decided that a deputation from this Board wait; upon the Tempieton Board at their nexfc ordinary d:iy of meeting. nB the day named by the Tempieton Board would not be convenient.— From tho Christchurch City Council, asking tho opiu'onof tho Board as to tho advmoilily of making each district a Local Board of Health, instead of (as at present) thp Drainage Board bting tho sole Local Board for the several Distriots. Tho Board having considered tho matter, it was resolved--" That the Riccarton Hoad Board does not see its way to join the Council in recommending that the powers of tho Local Board of Health a* now administered be changed, tho system 1 having: worked satisfactorily in this district."— The Surveyor's report* wus road and considered, and tho following rf solutions were carriod :— " That tho roftfi past section.Np. 180 bo formed to its full width, with seven foot footpath, from present formation to tho Middloton'Railway Btation; that the Gravel Depdt ori rural section 78 bo fenced in ; that tho Harewood road and Fendaltown footpath bo rolled ; tha"; I tho road through rural section 60 be for ned, from tho Kondultown toad to tho rivor hed."-*-The constitution of tiie Board of Conservators for the South Waimakariri to brought beforo

the Board, and, being fully discussed, it was resolved— "Thafc in tho opinion of the Riccarton Road Board, it is desirable that the Board of Conservators for the South Waimakariri should be an elected instead of a nomiuafced body, as afc present, and that Mr Rolleston, the meniber for the district, be requested to get an Act passed at the present Session of Parliament to meet the case." — The Treasurer was authorised to have £500 transferred from the deposit to the current account. — Accounts were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
