On Friday morning Mr Teel and Mr Jacobsen met again. Mr Veel had first move, and played P ta K 4 j Mr Jacobsen defended with the Fienchetto de Donneo. A close game followed, neither side having any advantage in the first two hours' play. At the 25th move Mr Veel gave Mr Jacobsen an opportunity of winning a pawn, which he took advantage of. Queens and rooks were then exchanged, which enabled Mr; Jacobsen to win another pawn, whereupon Mr Veel resigned, being left with a rook and threo pawns [against a rook and five: pawn?. The evening's play was resumed at the usual time, only three boards being occupied. At Board No. 1, Messrs Hookhatn and Hay .faced one another; Mr Hookham had the move and played an irregular opening, P to K 3, to which Mr Hay replied with PtoK 4. Mr Hookham then played Pto Q Xt 3, followed by BtoKt 2. The opening wa9 highly interesting, both sides, marshalling their pawns in straight lines, and their ranks were not broken through until move 15, when the positions began to look »erious, each side forcing the pawna into the King quarter, and making room for the rooks to come into play. At the 20th move Mr Hookham bfgan to force the play, and in a few moves gained a fine position, Mr Hay having all his work to do save an immediate collapse, and at move 28 Mr Hookham won a clear piece. Mr Hay, however, made some very fine play, and turned the tables for some time, but had eventually ,to succumb after playing one :of the best games during the tourney. At Board 2 Mr Janion opposed Mr Veel, who opened up the Scotch Gambit, which was readily accepted; "Mr Veel made a slip at move 20, which lost him apawn. Pieces were exchanged, and the game resolved itself into a pawns against pawns, and a cipital end game followed, which resulted in a draw. At Board' 3 Mr Newman opposed Mr Bray, who played the King's Xt opening. Mr Newman showed good form," and give his opponent some hard work, and at move 34 won the exchange. From this point to tho end Mr Newman had it his own way, and mated his opponent at the 68th move.
