News just come in states that a party of surveyors who were engaged on a block of Government land between Tairu* and To Arpha, in the Thames district, have been attacked by Maoris. It is supposed that two have, been shot, Messrs Crump and Bayldon tj wo European surveyors, and another who ■was wounded, succeeded in crawling into Tairuaand gave information of the affair. It is impossible to get any reliable information iw^et. Mnspeolor Kennedy of the police with Mr Andrews have started for Tairua. Mr Sheehan ha* been made acquainted with the matter, andtheßotomahana is getting ready in the event of Mr Sheehan deciding to go down to-night. Messrs Crump and Bayldon have been surveying in the district. Some of the paity detected the small party of Natives just as they were going to fire, but too late to get ■out of the way.
