The electioneering campaign was com* menced last night by Dr Newman, one of the -candidates for the City of Wellington. About -£00 persons were present, and the speaker was well received. Ho expressed himself in favour of the Liberal principles, but thought it was time the present Government were out of office. He would support manhood suffrage, but thought it would be advisable to defer it for a time. He thought there were other matters of greater importance to be ■dealt with than that of triennial Parliaments, though he was not averse to such measures. The Liberal Association meeting here last night was a success in regard to attendance and speaking, but nothing really practical was done. There seems to be a great want of organisation on the Liberal side, and owing to the one party working while the other is simply talking, there is every probability of two Opposition members being returned for the city. Mr Hutohison's seat in the Liberal interests might have been made safe, Mr Levin getting the other seat, but now Mr George Fisher, one of the Hansard reporters, has come forward professedly in the Liberal interest, and will spoil Mr Hutchison's voteß without having a show himself, the result being that either Mr Greenfield or Mr Hunter will get the second eeat. Mr Fisher has not resigned his position as Hansard re* porter, and slates that he has the authority of the Speakers of the two Houses to contest the seat on the understanding that if he is returned he resigns hia position as reporter, but that if defeated ho retains it. In the meantime he continues to draw the salary monthly, and that extraordinary arrangement causes a good deal of public comment. If lie is nominated steps will probably be taken to test hia eligibility under the Disqualification Act, 1877. The new writs will certainly be issued on Monday. ■ Sir G. Grey will leave for Ohristchuroh early next week, and Mr Sheehan will go North about the same time. Sir G. Grey intends to visit the Thames before the polling day. ;
