THE FIRE AT EDWARDS, BENNET, AND CO.'S.
The damage done at thiß fire haa not yet been definitely ealimated, though the firm was occupied yesterday in calculating it. As the goods in the Btore were dutiable, bufc had not had the duty paid upon them, tho officer.of H.M. Customs took chargo yesterday of all that had not been destroyed, and will retain possession on behalf of tho Government until the duty has been collected. In order to allow the Fire Brigade to thoroughly extinguish the smouldering debris, the salvage had to bo removed to other premises. In connection with the queation of who gave the first alarm, it is stated that some minutes beforo the bells rang a cabman had noticed that smoke was issuing from the premises, and seeing a light in the offices of Mesßrs Edwards, Bennett, and Co., at the corner of Manchester street, had knocked at the window, and called out that the bonded store was on fire, but was told by Borne one inßido to go away.
