Charles Benson, a man of colour, who described himself as a cook, was sent to gaol for a week to-day for vagranoy. The cvi* dence showed that lately he had been loitering about the streets at night, and lasfc evening ho was arrested while kneeling over a drunken seaman whom ho had mistaken for his mate.

The Chairman of the Tuapeka County Council has appealed to the Education Board on behalf of library for the Lawrence Gaol. He states that the prisoners have no means of profitably employing their leisure time. Some of tho School Committees are forwarding remonstrances against the constant resignations and transfers of teachers, and threatening to resign if the teachers are nofc kept to their posts for several months at a time.
