THE CHOPS AT TIMARU.

««> Tho copious showers of rain that iclf in South Canterbury on Monday anil Tuesday last did a great amount of good to all the standing crops, and especially to tho South of Timaru, most of which aro late. The pastures have been considerably improved, and feed is not likely to bo so scarce during the next, few months- as farmers anticipated. Tho turnip, rape, and! potato crops, which almost entirely failed, are now looking more attractive, but in a goodt many cases tho turnip nnd rape seed haver been so burnt up by tho hot weather, thafc not ono quarter of it is likely to germinate. Harvest operations have been begun in the* Geraldinc County, and a good many fields oE oats arc now in stook. Generally the yield* Avill bo light. Most of the crops in the southern portion of the County will give good yields. The crops in Waimate County are exceptionally good, considering the severe drought of the past three mouths, and fche= yield will be fair.
