ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting oE this Council was held at tho r lown Clerk's office on Monday evening last j present — Tho Mayor, Councillors Friedlander, Williamson, Boberts, E. Saunders, Shearman, and G. Parkin. mayor's statement. The Mayor said he had attended the conference held in Christchurch on Friday last, and he had declined on the part of their jßorongh to entertain the proposal of the Government, as the Ashburton County Count*il had given a large sum of money towards erecting a hospital in Ashburton. Mr HardytMinston had finished his inspection of tho water supply scheme, and thou* engineer was now proceeding with the lovels of tho streets. The scheme for the outfall drain, he thought, ought to be proceeded with at once, as it was a most important matter. COBBBSrONDENCE. The following correspondence was read : — From Charles Smithel, asking permission to remove a building from the rear of the Ash-inn-ton Hotel to his own residence. Granted. —From R. Lancaster, asking permission to erect a vorandah round his premises, and requesting the Council to put kerbing on the footpath in fiontof his shop. Referred to the Works Commit' ce. — From Mr H.M.Jones, usking to have rue footpath in front of his <:ew shops in the Wakanui road, formod and metalled. Referred to the Works Committee. — From Mr George Bolton stating thafc the residents in Temuka were anxious to have the township proclaimed a Borough, and asking for a copy of the petition required and other general information. The Clerk was directed to furnish the necessary information. — From the Ashburton Firo Brigade, forwarding a copy of their rules, &c, for the coniiruiation *of tho Council, and asking the Council to take steps to have the Brigade station shifted to some more central site. It was decided to write to the Government asking for section No. 761, in Havelock stree'.. i'or the Brigade station. The Brigade by-lav. s were referred to the Works Committee. municipal endowment. The Mayor thought the Council should apply at once for fche 1000 acres endowment for the Borough. As tho land near the town whi mostly promised they would be likely to net some a littlo distance away, say near the Hinds. > MISCELLANEOUS. The Engineer handed in his report, which iru3 read. It was decided that the Council write a letter to tho Govornmont, asking to have the reserves in the Borough handed over at once. Councillor Friedlander said that he had bead present at the trial of the fire engino that afternoon, at the pump lately put down in front of Mossrs Montgomery's buildings, and that the engine worked 9Aminutes, whin the supply of water ceased owing*to stoppage in tlio pipe through fine gravel being brought up. The Works Committee were authorised to call for tendera for making the outfall drain. Councillor Friedlander said ho had inotructed the Engineer to prepare specifications, and call for tenders for the temporary nuQtpbjr of water ; and had instructed tho _fown* Clerk to write to tho railway authorities for .permission to lay pipes across tho lino of -railway. boad boabd matters. Councillor Williamson thought tho Road Board had no claim for the full value of the cottages which they had handed over, becauso tbe Government had paid half of their cost. He would suggest the Finance Committee to take the matter up at the final settlement. The Major agreed with Councillor Williamson, and thought the Council Bhould tako action at once. Councillor Friedlander suggested that the finance Committeo should wait on the Road Board at its next meeting. Agreed to. ' BY-LAWS, Ac. It was resolved to write again to tho Government, and request their early consideration of the by-laws. The Mayor Baid the new map of the Borough would be completed that evening. I It was resolved, — " That the Works Com- / mittee be empowered to construct footpaths / and kerbing opposite tho premises of those j who requested the same, upon the applicants | depositing a chequo forone half the total cost, V with the Town Clerk." A 11BEBAL OVFEB. A letter wns received from the proprietor of the Ashburton Mail, offering to supply the Council with a bound volume of the As/t---imrton Mail for £5. Councillor Parkin moved, Councillor Friedlander seconded, — " That the Council obtain copies of the Mail since tho petition for formation of Borough had been sent in." "Carried. TENDEBS. Several tonders were opened for clearing the tussooks off the footpaths. Councillor Parkin moved, Councillor Suunclena seconded, — "That fche tenders bo declined, and that tho Works Committee be empowered to have tho work done by day labour." The Clerk was instructed to advertise fcho notice, thafc the valuation list of tho Borough was open for inspection. Several accounts were passod for payment, und the Council adjourned.
