There are in consequence numerous strikes. 1500 goods' guards and shunters on the Mid-^ land Railway have struck. Jan. 9. " Lord Beacensfield is progressing favourably. An outbreak of the plague has taken place at Astrachan. The Russian authorities are endeavouring to localise it. The statement that the Ameer of Afghanistan has entered Russian territory is not authentic.
