SOUTH MELBOURNE MATCH.
MELBOURNE, Jan. 10
The third match of the tour commenced to-day. Canterbury went first to the wicket, and at lunch time had three men out for 50 runs. Ollivier and Watson again played well, and there was promise of a good score. On resuming Cooper got rid of the remainder very speedily, and the innings came to an abrupt close for the poor total of 90. Cooper and Major bowled all through, the former securing eight wickets and the latter two.
South Melbourne then went in aud gave a grand display of batting. The Canterbury men were completely overmatched, and the scoring was terrific. The bowling was changed repeatedly, but Woolf, Baker, and Major, particularly the two last, treated it with contempt. The score is now 226 for five wickets, and a one innings' defeat is almost certain. Ashby got two wickets for 66, Lee one for 40, Fuller two for 23. The Melbourne wickets do not at all suit Ashby, and the elder Frith is all at sea. The following is the score so far : — CANTERBURY. [ First Innings.
