INVERCARGILL.

Jan. 9.

[SPECIAL.] Jan. 9. Dr Hodgkinson addressed his constituents at Biverton last evening. He went at great length into the history of the session. He defended his action in voting against the £500 exemption inland taxation; also against -the Railway BUI, the latter on the ground of the great indebtedness of the Colony and his own hesitancy to incur another eight millions of indebtedness, which he alleged would be required to carry ont the present scheme. He declared that after the events of the session he is a stronger Provincialist than ever, and tliat no Ministry would command his support that did not contemplate giving the country back Provincial institutions or something similar in their place. His speech elicited frequent applause. At the close a vote of thanks and confidence was passed for his manly address. Tho warrant for the execution of Walsh, the Waikawa murderer, has not yet arrived. The convict appears quite indifferent to his fate.

To-morrow a poll will be taken to decide whether the town is to take advantage of the power given by Parliament to incur a loan of £100,000 for water supply. Mr Cuthberteon, the late member for the town, strongly opposes the scheme, and advocates one for boring.

The fltofction of a Councillor for Winton Riding m the Southland County Council took place yesterday, and after a hard-fought contest resulted in the return of Mr John Thora--BOD, sen., by a majority of 90 votes over his opponent, Mr Sproule. This election had been rendered necessary by the former one being declared void.

At the inquest held to-day at Wallacetown, before Mr Monckton, Coroner, on the body of the man Redden, who was killed the other day at Waianawa by a bullock dray passing over his head, a verdict tantamount to one of accidental death was returned.

The regatta to be held at Henley, on the Taieri River, about the end of the month, promises to be a great success. For the Henley Challenge Cup, valued at fifty guineas, with fifty guineas added, distance one mile and a half, in heats, the following crews from Otago will probably compete : — Union, Nil Desperandum, and Young Colonist. There will be no sailing matches. Since the Waimate fire the Otago Flood Relief Committee have had no further call for aid from their funds. There is a balance of £400 in their hands, and a meeting will shortly be held to decide as to its disposal.
