An attempt was made on Dee. 20 to settle the dispute, and about 70 shareholders of the A.S.N. Company attended a private meeting, to consider an offer from the Seamen's Union to the following effect : — That the Company should retain Chinamen in the Hong Kong trade and in the Fiji so far as tho Black Swan is concerned. In the New Caledonia trade, that they take the men back in the same position as before, paying all wages due from the date of the strike, the men who had gone to work since the strike not to be interfered with. If the Company agreed to this, and guaranteed to keep the strikers on at the same wages for 12 months, the men would deposit £500 as security against their breaking their agreement. After some discussion the shareholders, by 43 .to 11, resolved not to move in the matter, but leave things as they were.
