BOARD OF EDUCATION.

a A meeting of the Board of Education was held yesterday afternoon in the Board-room, Normal Sohool ; present — Mesara John Inglis (Chairman), Duncan, Webb, T. W. Hall, Montgomery, and Bolleston. LEAVE OP ABSENCE. Leave of absence was given to Mr Tancred during the month of Maroh. BEPOETS. The Chairman laid on the table reports by Mr Beßtell of the Normal and Ease Ohristohuroh Schools with classification of Bohplars. A report of the Board of Examiners, on the classification of teachera who came up for examination, was also laid upon the table. ELECTION OF COMMITTEES. The Chairman stated what steps it was proposed to take with regard to the election of Sohool Committees. It waa resolved that the Chairmen of those Committees should be appointed returning officers, except they were themaelvea candidates, in which case they ahould appoint deputies; the election to take place on April 9. A NBW SAPE. The Chairman waa empowered to purchase a suitable safe, in which to keep the books and papers of the Board. SOUTHBEIDGE SOHOOL. An application was reoeived for additions to thiß school. The Chairman recommended the Board to sanction the erection of a porch, whioh they agreed to do, but they declined to sanction the expenditure of £180 to purchase a piece of ground for the master's house. The Board sanctioned the expenditure of a small amount for levelling and other matters. BAILWAY TBAVELLING. A letter waa read from the Government stating that the question of fares for school children waß under consideration. With regard to the travelling expenses of teaohera, it had beon resolved that the expenses must be borne by tho Educational Department. Mr Duncan thought the Board ought to pay the fares of the teaohers when attending the lectures. PHYSICAL SCIENCE. A communication was read from Professor Bickerton impressing upon tho Board tho necessity of giving more attention to physical science than was at present the case in the sohools. The Secretary (Mr Habens) Baid that physical science was not overlooked. Indeed, it bore a considerable place in the ourrioulura of the first and aecond classes. Tho Secretary waa requeßted to reply to Professor Bickerton to that effeot. SCHOOLMAS TEE'S ASSOCIATION. An application was received from the Seoretary of the Certificated Schoolmasters' Association for the use of a room at the Normal Sohool for the purpose of holding their meetings in. The ; Board regretted they oould not grant the application, not having a spare room at their disposal. INCIDENTAL BXPBNSES. A number of amaU grants were made to various County achools for incidental expenses for the month of Maroh. NOBMAL SCHOOL. The architect, Mr Cane, forwarded an .eati. ma(je of the co>fc of fenoing this sohool with' iron rails and fitting it with gates. It wa£ resolved not to prooeed with the work at preaehfr; XAIAJ.OI. 'Mr Cane reported on the condition of the

sohool at thia place. He reported that the building was safe, and the defects of amaU consequence comparatively Bpeaking. Still something required to be done to the school. It was resolved to call for tenders to have the work done. BINOS__AND SOHOOIi. Mr Cane also reported on the condition of thia school. The chimneys were quite safe, and no danger waa to be apprehended from them. He recommended, however, that the roof and lininga ahould be atrengthened. It waa resolved to call for tendera for the work. A COMPLAINT. Mr Wolfe, who Uvea next to the East Chrißtohuroh School, complained that the lads bathing in the East Christehuroh Sohool oould be seen from Mb garden through the fence, whioh wbb in a very bad condition. It waa reßolved to write to the Committee, and request ihem to put a proper fence at the place in question. After the transaction of some further unimportant business, the Board adjourned.
