The Government have sent the colonial sloop Victoria to Sydney to meet Governor Bowen, who is expected there hourly. It is not yet known if he is to have a public reception at Melbourne. Two candidates have been nominated for the Central province — Mr Sumner and Mr A. R. Smith. A further section of 20 ' miles has been opened on tho North. Eastern Railway. Mr Walter Clark, a very old colonist and squatter, died from the effects of a buggy accident. Crows are now in Melbourne training for the Intercolonial Gig Race, which takes place next week. The amount subscribed for stock amounts to £609,000. The Alfred Graving Dock is expected to be finished by the first of October. Tho Education Act continues to work satisfactorily. Chiarin's circus draws large houses. Sydney, March 22. The loss of tho missionary schooner Dayspring is reported at Aneitum. Tho crow was saved. Claney, for tho Carl murders, is reprieved, and his sentence commuted to 10 years' imprisonment with hard labour. Scource and McCrow are to be executed on April 8. Adelaide. Parliament is further prorogued to April 25th. Commercial. — Business during the week has been quiet. Wheat is much inquired for, but there is a difficulty in getting parcels ; 5s 4d to 5s 5d has been paid, and 5s 6d asked. Oats are in demand at 3s 4d to 3s 6d. Sugars have advanced in price, £41 10s being now given for fine -white Mauritius. Candles meet with ready sale at Is 0?d. In Adelaide large shipments of wheat continue to be made to England. The quotation remains at 4s lOd. Shipping. — Melbourne, March 21 — Arrived — Prosperity, from Hokitika. Newcastle, March 17 — Sailed — Elngrove, for Lyttelton ; Alarm, for Nelson.
