THE VOLUNTEERS.

* -— A match between the teams selected from No. 1 (Christchurch) Corps of Engineers and the City Guards was fired at the Heathcote range on Monday morning last, with a result contrary L o what has generally attended the firing of libpresentatives from the latter corps. Without, therefore, in any way detracting from the very, meritorious shooting . made by the Engineers, we may remark that their rival team did not include one of the old shots except Lieutenant Wolfe and Sergeant Clarke. The return match will, we understand, take place oh Monday week, and for that occasion no doubt efforts will be made by the Guards to get a better team together. The woather was very favourable to the match now in question, and the conditions were five Bhots at each range with any .position, and second-class targets throughout: The following are the scores : — ■ ENGINEERS. Yesterday the first competition for a Terry and Calisher's breech-loading rifle, presented to the Christchurch battery of artillery by Mr R. Rose, formerly of the Irwell Mill, took place at the Heathcote range. The conditions were that the riile must be won twice by the same competitor before becoming private property ; the number of shots to be seven each ; position any ; and targets second-class regulation size. By express stipulation on the part of Mr Rose, honorary members of the battery were also allowed to compete, and advantage of this was taken by two. The weather was very favorable to good shooting, and, as will be seen by the annexed scores, the competitors generally acquitted themselves' very well, whilst some of the scores are worthy of particular commendation : —

Gunner Fox is therefore the first winner of the prize, and will hold it until the next competition, when, if he is again successful, it will become his own property.
