The Melita sailed for Wellington, and the May Queen for Otago, on Aug 5. The shipping trade is very dull.
Webb's subsidy bill lapsed, but it will be among the first business taken up when Congress meet* again. The North Pacific Transportation Company intend to put on the Mosob Taylor, of 1,534 tons, next month between San Francisco and Honolulu. Messrs Collie, Stewart, and Company write to the San Francisco News of the World that their line will go into immediate operation on receiving documents from Australia, shewing that the colonies will pay the balance of the subsidies asked ; that the colonial contributions will be largely aided by subsidies from America and the Pacific Islands ; and that the service will be undertaken by the largest and fastest ships.
