CHBISTCHURCH. This Day. Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., B.M. Illegally on PbemiseB. — John McManas was brought up in custody, charged with having been illegally on private premises yesterday. Inspector Fender said, whilst coming down Armagh street, between 10 and 11 o'clock in the morning, he saw prisoner outside a house, and a person endeavouring to get him away. He was drunk and had tried to force his way into the house. He would not go away when desired, and witness thereupon arrested him. Prisoner had no excuse to make, and was accordingly fined 10s. Dbunkbnnbbb. — Joseph Koundtree, on the evidence of Constable Flanagan, was proved to hare been drunk and disorderly in High street yesterday afternoon, and being a previous offender was fined 10s. Labcent. — John Lewis, at present undergoing sentence for theft committed at the City Hotel in July last, was brought up, charged with a similar offence at White's Hotel about the same time. Detective Feast said he arrested prisoner on the sth of July on another charge. Afterwards he went to the Caledonian Boarding House, and took possession of the coat, vest, and trousers produced. The following morning he received the letter produced from the prisoner, then in the Lyttelton gaol, informing witness that he had stolen the apparel therein described from White's Hotel, Chiistchurch. Mary Ann Goldtborpe said she resided at White's Hotel, and recollected on the evening of the 4th of July seeing prisoner, about seven o'clock, in the passage of the hotel. He left the hnuee, and shortly afterwards it was discovered that some things had been moved out of Nos. 8 and 9 bedrooms. The bedrooms were all right shortly before she saw prisoner. It was subsequently found that a coat, trousers, and vest had been taken from the rooms. The coat belonged to Mr Dodd, and the other articles to Mr Allen ton, who left them at the hotel for use when they came to town. Charles Allen ton, residing at Lees ton, said : When in town, he stopped at White's Hotel. In December lait he left some wearing apparel in one of the bedrooms. A pair of trousers and a vest were amongst them. Those produced were the same. He could not swear positively to them, but had morally no doubt about them. Thomas Dodd, residing at Southbridge, said : When stopping at White's Hotel in June hut he left a coat in the bedroom. The one produced is the some. F. were made at his shop for Mr Allenton. J. Reston, chief gaoler, Lyttelton, proved to prisoner having written the letter produced. The prisoner, who had declined to cross-examine the witnesses, now made a statement to the effect that he was sorry for the theft, and bad written the letter to Detective Feast purely from a desire to make all the reparation that lay in his power. Fie pointed out that he had already received sentences equal to two years' imprisonment, and hoped the Bench would take these matters jointly into consideration when dealing with the present case. His Worship said he was glad prisoner had written the letter, but he really appeared to have committed theft in a most wholesale manner for the short time he was in the city. In reply to this, prisoner said he did not really know what he was doing at the time. From one cause and another he was quite upset, and hoped the Bench would not be too severe upon him. His Worship said he would be sentenced to six months' imprisonment at hard labour, the term to date from expiration of the sentences he was at present undergoing. Slaughter-house Licenses. — An error occurred in yesterday's report. The fines imposed upon R. M. Cresswell and J. Culliford should have been stated at 40s each.
