REVOLUTION IN PORTUGAL.

i There has been a military movement in ( Lisbon, the significance of which is cot very I clear — a mild sort of revolution, by which the

restless veteran Marshal Saldana, of 90 years, has virtually constituted himself, dictator of Portugal*, Placing himself at th 9 head of .six battalions, he marched (on the 19 th of May) . upon the Palace, forced admission-— after a brief skirmish, in which seven soldiers were killed— dismissed the Ministry, and formed a new _ one, with himself as minister of war. He is suspected of intriguing to secure the union of Portugal with Spain. Marshal Pritn has denied all complicity in the affair. Meantime the Spanish throne remains vacant, and the long interregnum is a fruitful source of difficulty. In a speech to the Cortes, the Marshal admits having treated with four candidates in succession, but yet ventures the hope that a king will be found within the next three months. His present object is to establish a monarchical confederation with Portugal, such as shall have the autonomy of the two nations unimpaired.
