DuxEDiN, May 19, 11.50 a.m. Vln the Provincial Council yesterday, Mr Ashcroft moved the following resolutions :— -1. •"" That it is expedient that steps should be taken with the view of uniting the province of Qtago with the province of Canterbury^ 2. " That in the event of the OtagtTand Southland Union Bill becoming law, it is desirable that power be obtained from the Assembly, with the concurrence of the Canterbury representatives, to arrange the basis of union." 3. "That an address be presented to the Superintendent, requesting that he will be pleased to give effect to the above resolutions." \ After a' debate, the Ji«t-resolution was carried by twelve to hinTjrr The second and third resolutions werff negatived. The Daily Times of to-day regrets the result o Abe debate, and says that by the union of Otago arid Canterbury "we should practically gain all the advantages we could, expect to gain from Separation, without destroying the political unity of the colony."
