CHRISTIAN KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY.

_ The annual meeting of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, was held at the City CouncirChambera, at 4.30 "p.m., yesterday. Present : The Right Rev. the Primate, the Very Rev. the Dean of Christchurohj Revs. C. Bowen. and E. A. Lingard, and Messrs A. R. Blakiston, and Andrews. Mr Gordon, treasurer^ in the absence of the Key J. O'B;'H6are, hon. secretary, from indisposition, read the following report :— " The lust general meeting" of the Society was held in January, 1869. Since that date the position of the Society has materially i'mj roved;' and its prospects at the (present time are much brighter than they were last year. Still, as may be gathered from the accounts, much remains to be' clone hefore the position of the Society can beregarded as satisfactory. "The working expenses of the Society have been reduced 'to the minimum." " Through "the kindness of a private indiyi<ju*l, the committee have been enabled, throughout almost the whole of the past year, to send home orders to the Parent or the National Society every alternate month; the derot has, therefore, been fairly supplied with saleable books. . : ■ "The bazaar held in January, 1870, in aid of tlje funds of the Society, wa9 most successful. Many interested themselves in it, and the result was tha f . the sum of £350 was at once paid off the debt, leaving a balance of £150. ..■.-.: " During the past year the rate of interest paid on the debt lias been reduced from 12^ to 10 per cent. There is in the depot a large amount of dead stock — the committee is of opinion that this might be disposed of by public auction: of course, the- loss would be considerable ; still a sufficient sum might he realised to enab'e the committee to send larger orders to England, or to pay oif a portion of the balance of the debt—either result would be most beneficial to the interests of the Society." On- the motion of the Very Rev. the Dean, the report was adopted. ' ' THY "following "balance-sheet was also adopted : — RECEIPTS. Jan. 1, 1869—
