CITY COUNCIL.

Monday, Mabch 21. The ordinary weekly meeting of the Council was held at seven o'clock p.m. His Worship the Mayor presiding, and all the Councillors being present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Town Clerk reported that during the week, he had received from general city rates, 1868, £1 5s ; 1869, £36 10s ; watering rate, £1 13s 9d ; scavengering, £6 5s 8d ; Market-place rent, 7s ; total £46 ls sd, and that the overdraft at the bank was £193 Os sd. Accounts amounting to £51 13s 9d were passed and ordered to be paid. The following tenders for supplying screened shingle during the ensuing six months, and carting the same to wherever required for street repairs were opened and considered : — Joseph Hadfield 4s per cubic yard, W. Sycamore and J. Davis 3s 5d do. The last named tender was accepted. The Surveyor's report was read and considered. The Works' Committee recom-> [ mended that tenders be invited for carting 500 yards of broken metal from the Government reserve on the Lincoln road to the main thoroughfares of the city. The artesian well for the fountain, presented by Councillor Anderson, had been sunk at the S.W. corner of the Bank of New Zealand during the week, a flow of six feet high being obtained, and the masons were engaged fixing the stonework. The reservoir in front of the White Hart Hotel had been pumped dry by the steam fire engine, and the valves repaired. Three additional men had been engaged for the labour gang, which had been employed during the week in watering the streets, carting side drain rubbish, clearing out side drains in Colombo, Lichfield, Tuam, St. Asaph, and Gloucester streets, and Oxford terrace ; stone channelling in High street, making alterations at the engine house, picking up loose stones, clearing out the south drain, and putting in culvert on the South town belt. The first clause was ordered to be carried into effect. The remainder of the report was approved. A letter was read from the Heathcote Road Board, acknowledging receipt of the report from the Council on the management of the South drain. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that Mr Minchin had promised to comply with the notice served upon him respecting the improvements required to a drain on his land in Antigua street, also that complaints still continued to be made of the offensive state of the side channel in Cashel street, from High street to Barnard's Repository. The nuisance was created by the urinal from tbe Repository flowing into the channel, and Mr Barnard had been instructed to provide a stronger flow of artesian water through the urinal. The action of the Inspector was approved. A report was read from the rate collector, but it contained nothing of public importance. *&His Worship called attention to the fact of the eastern end of the North town belt where it fronts on the cemetery being only one chain wide instead of two chains as elsewhere. Thia was occasioned by the cemetery reserve projecting one chain over the sonthern boundary of the belt, and it had been suggested that the cemetery committee should be asked to let the Council bave the projecting piece of land, if not permanently, at least temporarily, in order that the North town belt might be made one uniform width throaghout. After a brief discussion the Works Committee were requested to communicate with the cemetery committee for the purpose of ascertaining their views upon the matter. Councillor Anderson moved, Councillor Calvert seconded, and after a short discussion it was resolved— l. That, in the opinion of this Council, it is desirable tbat another steam fire-engine should be purchased for the city. 2. That a committee, consisting of the Fire Brigade Committee and the mover, be appointed to obtain funds by subscription or otherwise for the carrying out of the above object. •*'. '1 hat, contingent on funds being procured for purchasing a steam fire-engine, this Council will undertake to place two suitable tanks (reservoirs) in the localities mdi cated in the report of the committee adopted by the Council on the Bth of October, 1869. The Council then adjourned.
