FAIR AND BABY SHOW

GREAT SUCCESS OF NATIOAL PARTY EFFORT OPENING BY MR W. SULLIVAN : Although the official opening of tlie annual fair and baby show of tlie le Puke branch of the New Zealand National parity, .held on Tuesday last, was not timed, until 2 p.m., it was being weli patronised by 11a.m. The Various stalls were pieutiiully supplied and were run as follows:

Cake stall (Pukehimi and Otamarakau) Mrs 3. wl Gunton and Helpers; produce stall (Te Puke and Papamoa), Mrs J. Cairuth aijd helpers; sweets (Paengaroa and Pongakawa), Airs T. Conway and Mrs A. M. Hickson and helpers. The stewards for the baby show were All's Hewison and Airs Mends jnr. A fisiiing, competition was in charge of Airs Worsley and Airs Read, and the darts competition by Miss Crawford. The flower stall was in charge of Mrs Dudley Vercoe. The stewards for the photographic competition were Mrs Senior and Airs L. ..lcCracken. The afternoon tea department was in the capable hands of Airs Bragg and her band of willing helpers. The doorkeepers were Messrs F. Bc.stock and F. J udu. Air G. Muir introduced Air W. Sullivan, who officially opened the show and fair. Air Sullivan apologised to the gathering on behalf of Air F. W. Doidge, who was not able to be present, and gave a brief resume of the work that had been done by the National Party and the work they had before them, lie wished the ladies every success m this and all other efforts on behalf of tlie party., , ; V A few minutes before one o’clock babies ill arms and babies in bassinets descended on the hall, and it was obvious that Miss Lenihaii, matron of the Te Puke Hospital, had a difficult time as judge. The children’s ages ranged beteween one month and eighteen months, and had been divided. into three classes. Trophies were presented to the winning baby and runner-up, boy and : girl, in each class, the results being:—. v. : ’

Class 1 (one to six months, boys)— Baby J. Jones, 1; Baby Fowler 2. Girls —Baby McLeod, 1; Baby Pinker, 2. Class 2 (six months to 12 months). —Boys.—Baby Richmond 1; Baby Al. Hope 2. Girls.—Baby Packer 1; Baby Ellett 2. Class 3 (12 to 18 months).— Boys.— Baby Ivan Hewison 1 j Baby. Madden 2. Girls.—Baby Allport 1; Baby Jennifer Jones 2. Baby John Savage was highly recommended in this latter class. . The trophies were presented by Airs W. Sullivan, of Whakatane, to the proud mothers of the children. The result of the photographic competition was a tie between Airs Allport Jin'., and Airs Martin Jnr., with Airs Cameron a close runner-up.

Competitions were won as follows Airs F. Bostock won the flower spray competition and the quilt presented by Aliss Caraith, was won by Airs Butcher. A cake donated by Aliss Cruicksliank and made by Airs S. W. Guntoii Snr., was won by Airs J. McDougall. A picture and box of chocolates, given by Airs' S'. W. Alitcliell, were won by Alaurice Vercoe and Mrs Cuff respectively. The darts competition resulted in a tie for'the first place in the ladies’ section between Mrs J. Tod and Aliss P. Woisin; Air D. Vercoe won the prize for the men. This is the second lair and baby show organised by the Ladies’ Committee of the National Party and congratulations can be accorded the committee and the energetic secretary, Aliss Carruth, for the great success of Tuesday’s function.
