ENGAGEMENT PARTY

Mrs. H.ekson entertained a jolly party of about thirty young folk at her home at Pongakawa last Thursday evening to celebrate the engagement of her neice, Miss Stella Ball, to Mr. G. Teak ol Auckland. The large drawing-room was gay with daffodils, white a cheery log fire added to the comfort of the guests. They were received oy Mrs. Hickson, who wore a smart henna frock. Miss Ball looked charming in a very prettyfrock of petrel blue, while her mother, Mrs J. Ball, was m Marina blue velvet. Games and competitions and community singing were joined in by all and much merriment was caused during the making of the paper sweet baskets tor competition, the competitors working in pairs. Some very pretty baskets weie made and the judges, Mrs J. Ball, Miss M Bell and Miss P. Luxford, had a difficult task, but finally awarded the prize to Miss B. Walter and Mr S. McDowell. The new game .of twiddle sticks was played and proved to be most popular, the winners being Miss S. Law and Mr Ken. Ball.

After a delightful supper, Mr W. Barker made a very bright and clever speech, complimenting the competition winners and remarking on the enjoyable time that had been spent. He then congratulated Miss Ball, the guest of the evening, and all joined in singing “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Before leaving for home the guests gave three cheers for Mrs Hickson, who is always such a popular hostess.
