United v. Pongakawa A very interesting game was played on No. , ground on Saturday, when United rather unexpectedly defeated Pongakawa by 23 points to 8. Although tho winning team was somewhat weaken ed by the absence of Farmer, their ranks included Bennett, Wilkins, and W. and 0. Webber, the lastnamed providing a tower of strength in the forward division. McKe rzie took the field for Pongakawa and gaVe a good display. The country team kicked off, and United rushed the ball back to, Pongakawa’s 25, where they had a futile attempt to goal from a penalty. • A dangerous rush by the blacks was stopped by Bennett. United kept up the pressure and from a pass by Joyce, 0. Webber crossed the line. Arthur took the kiokx&nd goaled, 5 0. The attack by the town team was maintained and tries were scored in rapid succession by Joyo?, and Lipsey (2). The major points were added in each case, bringing the score to 20-0. Pongakawa then appeared to recover from their temporary disorganisation and carried play to United’s line where Morkel got over. McKenzie made a good attempt at goal, but the wind was too strong; 20-3. In the second spell the play was very even, first one side and then the other having the advantage. United were the first to add to their score a good run by Lipsey, who p S;ed to Joyce, enabling the latter to register his second try. Arthur failed to convert. An attack by Pongakawa took play to the centre where Tata secured the leather and with a good run put on another try for Pongakawa. McKenzie was successful with the kick, 23-8. No further score bad been made when the whistle blew. O. Webber in the forwards and Lipsey in the backs, put in some splendid work for the United whilst McKenzie, Tate, Morkel and Wiokliffe were conspicuous in the country team. Mr Heather handled tho whistle. Rangiuru v, Papamoa The match, played on No. 1 Ground, was rather disappointing, for although the Papamoa team played a hard game they were unable to avert defeat by 27 points to 5. it is pleasing to see that, despite their lack of success this season, the Club continues to keep the flag lying. This is the true sporting spirit, and lovers of the game will wish them better luck in future. Arthur Morton, who has again donned the jersey, was responsible for one of their tries, whilst MoClausland scored the other. For | Rangiuru tries were obtained by j 1 McLeod (1), T.
