N. Z. Pig Breeders Association
Bay of Plenty Branch The annual meeting of the above Association was held in the Town Board office, Te Puke, on Tuesday, June 6th. There was a good attendance and representation from Omokoroa to Opotiki. The election of officers resulted as follows : President, S. Jephson (OpotikO ; Vice-Presidents, H. J. Clarke (Tauranga) W. J. Law (Ohinepanea) ; Hon Secretary, D. S. Ross(Te Puke). The meeting discussed at length swine fever and foot and mouth disease and regretted that the Government, while ignoring [the many real sources of infection for foot and mouth disease, refuses to lift the embargo on stock from England, as it is beyond doubt, that the importation of stock is an impossible source of infection as the period of incubation is so short and the voyage to New Zealand so long. It was decided to ask the Government to lift the embargo and take more precautions with straw and bulbs and other sources of infection.
The matter of a Pig Recording Club in the Bay of Plenty was again discussed and the necessary preliminary work is nearing completion tpj enable the Branch to have such a club functioning in tho near future. At the next meeting it is hoped to have something concrete to put before the members in connection with this matter. No stone is to be left unturned to have this important and interesting work started. Other general business was tansacted and it was decided to hold the next meeting at Whakatane in July.
