The Blue Star Line

Offer To Control Boards

Mr H. J. Gill, Secretary of the local branch of the N. Z. Farmers’Union, is in receipt of the following letter from the Blue Star Line Shipping Company Dear Sir, —At the present moment the two representatives of the N.-Z. Dairy Control Board and]the Meat Board are in London negotiating renewals of their cargo carrying contracts with the three Conference Shipping Companies. As you know, once these contracts are entered into the rates obtained will stand for a period of years and we therefore respectfully with to bring before the notioe of your Union our recently announced intention of making a bid for a share of this business. If we are successful, we definitely promise one ship per month regularly maintained, and an allfound reduction in freight charges not only of primary produce, but also of all classes of inwaid and outward freights. Under present day conditions with primary produce at a very low price level and with this country barred by distance from enjoying the advantages of rival countries situ ated closer to the Home market, It is essential that the farmer receive every Concession available Without regard to past preferOH 06 Si In brief the offer which we flatted before your Control Boards is as follows 1— ‘‘We understand your Board is Shortly making a new contract tor the Carriage of refrigerated produCe from New Zealand to the United Kingdom and elsewhere and we wish to have the opportunity of taking, a share in this contraot. We are prepared to Undertake similar obligations to those entered into by the other Ship owners and to make concessions in freight. We will under take to provide one fast modern ship monthly specially equipped ixud ekDerienced not only in the carriage of frozen beef, mutton, lamb, fruit and Dairy Produce but also of chilled beef which it would be to the great advantage of New Zealand to develop. The Capital and Management of this Company are entirely British and in addition a number of our ships have been built with the assistance'hf the British Government Under the Trade Facilities Act. The Ottawa arrangements have - Considerably reduced the requirements of the services in which these boats have been employed and as the tonnage from the Dominion has steadily increased during the last few years and the Dominion Trade benefited by arrangements, it seems reasonable that these British Ships should be allowed to participate in the development of this Empire trade. That there is room for .these ships in the New Zealand homeward schedules is manifest by the fact that the existing lines are Chartering vessels formerly employed in the Carriage of meat from other countries and propose building additional steamers. 1 ' this wo feel, Covers the situation* and wore Commend It to you for your earnest Consideration We Want a share of you r lfade hnd to obtain that share probared to filPiKe freight reductions. Yours Faithfully. THE BLUE STAR LtNE
