Piles of Railway Wharf

Report of Borough Engineer 9

Mr C. W. Boak, engineer to the Tauranga Borough Council at the close of a lengthy report on the deterioration of the piles of the Railway wharf (which are sheathed in Muntz metal) submitted the following summary. •“ (a) That similar deterioration has occured elsewhere in the harbour where the metal is not exposed to the effluent from the Borough septio tank. 7 (b) That the deteriorated sheets recorded'in the report are mainly above sea level when the effluent is present in the ebb tide. (c) That the weight of the engineering opinion indicates that Muntz metal is not suitable sheathing for piles immersed in sea water.

My opinion is that the serious condition of the Muntz metal sheathing on the Harbour Board’s wharf.at McLean’s Street is not due to the discharge of effluent from the Council’s septic tank.”

The matter was deferred for consideration until next meeting.
