In The Te Puke And Maketu Ridings The County engineer. Mr Benham, reported as follows on roads and bridges in the Te Puke and Maketu Ridings at the last meeting of the Council: — Te Puke Riding In this Riding, maintenance work has been carried out on the following roads : Ohauiti, Waitao, Te Puke Quarry Road, Manoeka and Nos 2, 3 and 4 Roads. The following surfacing materials were carted by the No 6 truck and spread ; Bell’s Road 10 cubic yards spawls; Matapihi Road. 1.9 cubic yards screenings ; Waitao Road, 88 cubic yards screenings ; No 2 Road, 128 cubic yards rhyolite. 12 cubic yards sand ; No 3 Road, 30 cubic yards rhyolite. Maketu Riding

At the beginning of last month the No 1 Grader was working on the Mania tutu,. Pongakawa and Steven’s Road, but owing to rationing, the balance of the byroad maintenance work has been oarried out by the Riding gang, and, in addition, to work on the foregoing roads, repairs have been effected to the Old Coach Road, Te Matai Road and the Paenga* roa Maketu Roads,

On the motion of Cr Blaymires, it was resolved that permission be given to Mr W. J. Griffin to fence and use a piece of land at Canaan subject to the approval of the engineer. Gray was willing to lease an area of land on the western side of the Kaitnna Bridge that was owned by the Council—The Council intimated that it was prepared to consider an offer, Cr Mends stated that Mr C. Vercoe was desirous of the Council placing a culvert across a road at Te Tumu that was almost impassable.—lt* was pointed out that the Tumu-Kaituna Drainage Board had made the drain and should erect the culvert.
