The Te Puke Times TUESDAY, JAN. 6, 1931

IN these days of world depression, deficits and unemployment it is pleasing to note that two such famous journals as the London Financial News and Financial Times are of opinion that the present year will witness the turning point of the world’s economic troußles and the traversing of an appreciable stretch on the upward course. Stress is, however, laid upon the necessity for co-operation between capital and labour. Most people will agree with this proviso. There has been too much of the "pull devil, pull baker" in the past without, in many instances, due recognition of the rights of either party. Capital has to realise that the working man is entitled to a fair renumeration for his labour, for he, as well as those of the wealthier class, has his family obligations and it is lonly natural that he should desire to place those dependent upon him beyond the reach of want. On the other hand the workers must admit that capital is an absolute necessity in the development of any Country, and that without it enterprise must languish and stagnation result. The policy of striking which has often been the method adopted of forcing employers to comply with demands almost invariably results in tremendous loss not only to an industry but to the workers themselves. Happily this is being recognised by the more moderate of the labour leaders, whilst the industrial heads are showing a greater disposition to meet the workers on a conciliatory bases. There is no doubt but that the present economic troubles will bring about a greater desire for the settlement of disputes by peaceable rather than aggressive methods and that every possible means of reaching a settlement satisfactory to both sides will be investigated.
