SATURDAY'S MATCHES
The first of this year's cup matches were played on Saturday last, when the United Club met Rangiuru and Maketu met Rangatawa. There was a good attendance of spectators and considering how little practice the players have had, two interesting games were witnessed.
In the United Rangiuru match the former team had the best of the game except for a few minutes before the call of time, when the latter made things decidedly lively, The only score throughout was a try gained by Harnden for the town fifteen, which was not-converted, Tho winners had a strong forward team, in which Morton, Petherbridge and Harnden were conspicuous, but their back division was decidedly weak in scoring men, the absence of McGeehan and Austin being par ticulaf ly noticeable. . Boucher played a very fine game and' was ihe mainstay of the backs, Jack Bennett also putting in some good work, For the loaera Wihapi and Ariiaku and Ahcmiro put in gqodwork. The passing of the Rangiuru backs was decidedly superior to that of their opponents,- v '
The m.:tch, Maketu v. Rangatawa, had an unexpected'result, the former winning by eleven penis 10 nil. The parae was very willing and some excellent play was seen, the rmjoriiy of the players bn*ng in gcod form, Three of the Tepßelts scored a try each for the winners, that gained by Komo Tapsell being converted. Rangatawa .had the services of G. Asheiy Gardiner, and S. McEwen,; but, nevertheless, the Maketu fifteen proved Loo strong. The victory was a popular one, as it will have the effect of making the remaining contests more interesting,
