- - o PRIME MINISTER'S STATEMENT Wellington, August 4. In the House of Representatives to-day the Prime Minister, Hon. W. F. Massey, made a statement regarding war precautions. He said the naval reserves had been called out and the censorship of inward and outward cables established. All vessels would be examined at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. The warship Philomel had been handed over to the Imperial authorities and the garrison artillery were manning the l'orts day and night. These precautions had been taken on instructions from the Imperial Government. There was no need for alarm at present, Sir Joseph Ward, on behalf of the Opposition, said he realised the responsibility and olfered the full co-operation of his party in any action taken to preserve the integrity of the Empire.

Owing to the outbreak of war, the Hawke's Bay meat exporting companies have practically decided not to ship any frozen produce for the present. Consequently the C. and I). liner Star of India, which arrived in the roadstead yesterday, will, after discharging inward cargo, proceed to Wellington without taking any meat.
