EDEN.

With the redoubtable and habitual member, Mr John Bollard, out of Eden by resignation from politics, there is choice only of Mr C. J. Parr, the Mayor of Auckland, and Mr W. R. Tuck, a young lawyer quite new to politics. Mr Wesley Richards, Social Democrat, who cannot hope to win the seat, merely complicates matters by refusing to withdraw, although, of course, he has every right to show his confidence in 'his ability to represent

Eden.. Mr Parr's political history, both municipal and national, is exceedingly well known. He has applied himself heart and soul to his work for this city and he has not been content to be led, believing in a policy of initiation and performance. He relies for his support on the many evidences of his municipal domination to be found in Auckland. In Eden the electors have increased in three years by 3300 and whether the political feelings of this very large and important city district have undergone a change in the interval will be determined next week. Mr Parr deserves specially well of the people of Auckland, but the people will not go to the poll with a list of his services to guide them. The public is fickle. It cannot be denied that it will come as a great surprise to all electorates outside Eden if Mr Parr does not "reach home" by a substantial majority. The popularity Mr Tuck nas gained during the short period lie has wooed Eden must be of a surprising kind if he can oust the Mayor of Aiickland. The necessity of splitting votes with the Social Democrat candidate will further effect any chance Mr Tuck may have of being returned. Mr Tuck will possibly command a large church and prohibition vote but it is not likely that it will be sufficiently great to keep the Mayor out of Parliament.
