WHANGAREI
The annual plain and fancy dress ball in connection with the Whangarei Oddfellows' Lodge was held on. Wednesday last in the Oddfellows' Hall, Watersstreet, Whangarei. The , building -was,; beautifully decorated and presented quite a fairy-like scene while the dances were in progress. The walls were completely hidden with lovely ferns, riikau, palm, etc., large mirrors being placed at intervals amongst the greenery with excellent effect. Mr Galbraitn provided a delightful supper, the table being prettily arranged. The committee deserve great credit, for the arrangements were admirable, and the ball was in every respect a pronounced success. Amongst the ladies in fancy dress were Miss H. Reyburn, Italian Peasant ; Mis 3 J. Beyburn, French Peasant ; Miss Blake, Queen of Diamonds ; Miss R. Rust looked extremely well as a Mexican Gipsy; Miss Stuart, Pirate Girl; Miss Reed, Spring; Miss R. McMillan, Cornish Maiden ; Miss P. Crisp looked well as Summer ; Miss A. Cafler, Tambourine Girl; Mrs W. E.Baiton, Mabel Stanley (very tasteful and pretty costume) ; Miss K. Galbraith, Scotch Lasßie ; Miss Russell, Tambourine Girl ; Mrs W. A. Hutchings, French Republic ; Miss E. Wood, Grecian Lady; Miss Nelson, Stars and Stripes ; Miss JLi. Armstrong, Butterfly ; Miss Instone, Cornish Maiden; Miss Walter, Red Cross Nurse; Miss J. North, Flower Girl; Mrs C. Cowen, Red Domino; Miss Henrici, Fortune Teller; Miss A. Archibald, Night ; Miss K. Archibald, Cornish Maiden ; Miss M. Beresford, Cornidh Maiden; Miss Angelo, Italian Girl; Mrs Bunyard, Lady 19th Century; Miss L. Hoey, Tahitian Lady ; Miss Maddren, Queen of Hearts. Many pretty evening dresses were worn : Mrs JEL Jenkins, tasteful creme cashmere gown ; Mrs Cubitt, black and cardinal co-tume; Miss Cubitt looked nice in creme crepon ; Mrs E. Hutchings, black and gold costume ; Miss A. Macken, pretty pale blue gown ; Mrs G. Cooke, handsome black nierveilleux ; Mrs Whitley, handsome gown of biscuit-coloured silk trimmed with green ; Mrs (Dr.) Smith, tasteful trained gown of fawn silk ; Miss Macken, becoming creme costume. A few of the gentlemen in fancy costumes were : Mr Turney, Parish Clerk ; Mr W. E. Barton, Pirate; Mr Bunyard, Sergeant of Police ;_ Mr F. Cooper, Cook ; Mr Baker, South bea Islander; Mr J. Reyburn. Frederick ; Mr A. Cafler, Sailor ; Mr Coutts, Sailor. Mr Wilson, Nigger, caused much amusement with with his antics ; Mr Calkin, His Satanic Majesty ; Mr A. Macken, Midshipman ; Mr G. Mair, Neapolitan Sailor ; Mr F. Tothill, Sailor ; Mr T. Macken, Deacon Skinner ; Mr P. Moore, Lawn Tennis, and numerous others.
