By the Electoral Act which the Government propose introducing next session, polling day for a general election is declared a public holiday. Wagering on the result is made penal, but it would be more to the point to close all public-houses on polling day.
It is stated that the Government will embody in the Income Tax Act a proviso that all returns of income shall be published, as is the case in t^e United States. This is a 'cute Yankee dodge to work upon the average man's love of ostentation and get him to declare his full income and something mor» ; but I calculate the thing will not work in New Zealand. We have too much sense to be humbugged in that way. And besides the device is not required, for everybody, knows everybody else's affairs and he will be a cunuing devil who is able to conceal his income in this country.
