THE HON. EDWIN MITCHELSON.
late member for Eden, again woos the suffrages of that electorate. His political sins are confessedly many, but his personal popularity is on the other hand very great. His various services to Auckland are counterbalanced by the way in which he betrayed her interests on the question of the Trunk Bailway to Taranaki. Kauri gum is a sore point with a lot of people, and a rotten native policy stinks in the nostrils of decent pakehas. The B.N.Z. never tried to influence him, any more than it did Whitaker or Atkinson, or any other member of the Globo Ministry ; he says so, and he ought to know. He is now clear of the Bank, and I hope the others are too— l would not like my enemy's dog to be in the power of the Globo octopus. Mr Mitchelson is a faithful follower of Atkinson, but seems inclined to make a break in the direction of land nationalisation, though he will not support a Land Tax. A thoroughly practical politician in the main, but a poor speaker. His influence and status are spoken of contemptuously in the South Aucklanders agree that * Teddy is a good man, but in bad oompany.' His reelection is doubtful ; but he will obtain strong support in the townward portion of the district. If he is defeated, he will fall a martyr to Atkinsonianism.
