Extreme agitation prevailed at the ToAvers, Remuera, Avhen it became knoAvn that a real live "dook" Avas to dine there. The Mayoress felt that the ambitions of a lifetime had all at once been realised, and tripped doAvnstairs to consult the cook, Avho, in the excitement of the moment, ran a salamander through her back hair and burst into tears. The Mayor himself Avas someAvhat affected, ancl Avhen "the dook " entered the room and absolutely had the condescension to shake — yes positively shake — his hand he dropped a silent tear. Over the dinner scene that follo.ved Aye Avill draAV a veil. The _-octacle of a blue-blooded nobleman conveying boiled turkey and oyster sauce to his aristocratic mouth is far to solemn a sight to dilate upon. We can only regret that Avhile his Grace Avas in the neighbourhood of Remuera he didn't call on that jollliest of amateur farmers, Alf Isaacs. Alf Avould have given him a better glass of "fizz" (1874 Pommery and Al) than ho has tasted on this side of the world, and could also have shown him that a successful merchant's business ancl a delightful model farm are not incompatible Avith each other.
