The present Duke is a quiet unassuming man, ready to make himself pleasant to everyone, and a very agreeable companion. On board the "Sorata," coming out, he joined heartily in all ship-board amusements, and told capital stories in the smoking room. Ever since he Avas Lord Mandeville His Grace of Manchester has cherished the idea of enriching the Montague's impoverished exchequer by judicious land purchases in the colonies. During his present trip he bought a big block in Northern Queensland, and he would, doubtless, have done ditto in New Zealand if he had seen anything to take his fancy. The Duchess of Manchester is a very clever and brilliant Avoman ; in fact, rumour declares that she rather overwhelms the Duke. Her Grace takes a great interest in politics, and rather aspires to iill the place left vacant a year or tAvo ago by the death of Lady Waldegravc. Unfortunately, the Manchester?, like many less distinguished persons, suffer from a Avant of "the ready," and cannot afford too many grand receptions.
