Seven Maoris from the Waliaroa dis trict who were riding in a truck had miraculous escapes from injury when the vehicle struck a telegraph pole as at was rounding a sharp bend at Motu Maoho, qii the Hamilton-Morrinsville main road, and capsized. The heavy vehicle caught on fire after it had come to rest upside down, and was damaged almost beyond- repair. Most of the Maoris were riding on the back of the lorry at the time and owed their escape to the fact that the vehicle was not a covered-in one. When it overturned they were thrown completely clear. Two received minor cuts and abrasions. A large quantity of fruit which was on the truck was strewn over the roadway.
