MR. J. THORN’S MEETINGS
ADDRESSES IN THE VALLEY.
VOTES OF CONFIDENCE
On Friday afternoon, Mr. James Thorn, Labour candidate for Thames,
addressed a public meeting at Wliarepoa on the Labour Government’s legislation and policy, and from the dairy farmers lie received a friendly hearing.
A motion of thanks and confidence was
carried unanimously,
At Hikutaia.
On Friday evening, Mr. Thorn addressed a very largely-attended meet ing at Hikutaia, which received him enthusiastically. County Councillor A. Robinson presided. Mr. Thorn’s speech covered matters like the nationalisa tion of the Reserve Bank, the removal
of private investing interests from the State Advances Corporation, the guaranteed price and dairy marketing pol icy, civil and soldiers’ pensions, and the Social Security scheme. He answered
several questions. Cr. Ellis moved a motion thanking Mr. Thorn for his address and the Government for its splendid work on behalf of the people of New Zealand, and also expressing complete confidence in Mr. Thorn as M.P, for Thames. An amendment was moved expressing thanks only. Only 10 people voted for the amendment on a show of hands, and from 80 to 90
voted for the confidence motion,
At Tapu.
On Saturday night, at Tapu, Mr, Thorn addressed a crowded audience,
over which Dr. Barkas presided. Tho candidate received an ovation when he rose to speak, and he was frequently applauded throughout his speech. A
motion of thanks and confidence was carried by acclamation.
At Karangaktoko and Waikino,
On Sunday afternoon and evening, Mr. Thorn addressed two very largelyattended meetings at Karangahake and Waikino on the subject of “Peace and the International Labour Conference at Geneva.” Large numbers of workers attended both meetings. At each meeting Mr, Thorn was accorded a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence, at the former on the motion of Cr. T. Cotter, and at the latter of Mr. Colin Mason.
