MR. J. THORN ACTIVE

MEETINGS ON COAST.

GREAT INTEREST TAKEN. On Wednesday evening, Mr. Janie; Thorn, Labour candidate for Thames, addressed meetings of the electors in the Cabaret at Puru, and the North School at Tararu.

At Puru, the attendance numbered nearly 70, the meeting being the largest of its kind ever held in the village. Mr. Thorn’s reception w r as most friendly. At* the conclusion of his address, the candidate was given a unani : mous vote of thanks and confidence, and members of the local branch of the Labour Party provided supper and a dance entertainment. At Tararu. At Tararu, there was a very largo attendance, Mr. J. Morley presiding. The candidate dealt fully with such questions as increased wages, reduced hours and the cost of living, improvements in the pensions system, and tho Social Security Act. His statements were followed with the keenest interest. A vote of thanks was carried by acclamation.

A feature of both meetings was the largo number of women present. At Kopu and Puriri.

Coiitin,uing his election campaign, Mr. Thorn addressed a well-attended meeting in the Kopu Hall last night, Mr. C. Autridge presiding. The candidate. was given a good hearing. At the conclusion of his address, the following resolution was carried unani mously:—“That this meeting heartily thanks Mr. James Thorn, M.P., for his energetic aud successful ■work on behalf of the Thames electorate during the past three years, and expresses its appreciation of the splendid achievement of the present Government. It also wishes to place on record its complete confidence in Mr. Thorn as M.P. for Thames.” At Puriri. Later in the evening, Mr. Thorn addressed a very large meeting in tho hall at Puriri, over wdiich Mr. R. B. Thomas presided. Apart from one or two interjectors, whom Mr. Thorn dealt with humorously, the meeting was of the friendliest character. It did not end until past 11 o’clock. After answering several questions, mainly on the guaranteed price, Mr. Thorn was given a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence, the motion being moved by Mrs. H. McGregor.
