EARTH MOVEMENT.

GROUND IN THE BOROUGH.

A Close Watch Needed.

NO CAUSE FOR ALARM

BOROUGH ENGINEER’S REPORT. “Considerable ground movement has occurred within the Borough during the month,” stated the Borough engineer, Mr. B. A. Mahoney, in his report to the Advisory Committee yesterday. “Though as yet not causing any undue alarm, it it will have to be watched

very closely, as its effect on the water supply reservoirs may be very serious,” added Mr. Mahoney. The first sign of the movement was

in the area to the north of Upper Albert Street, where the ground movement was very considerable, continued Mr. Mahoney. The latest developments were at the Block reservoir, the Terrace pumping station near the power-house, and in the vicinity of the Waikiekie reservoir.

The engineer explained the effect of the movement and the methods which had been used to protect areas. The movement of the Terrace pumping station, added Mr. Mahoney, resulted in the severe straining of tho brick wall and the throwing of the doors and windows out of alignment. The movement in the vicinity of the Waikiekie reservoir had taken the form of a crack in the ground across the seaward embankment and a drop in the ground level of approximately 8 or 9 inches below the crack. Remedial measures had been carried out so as to stop water from entering tho crack.

“Whilst I do not think there is any immediate cause for anxiety, a close check will have to be kept on all these places,” concluded the engineer, after giving further particulars. “So far,” he added, “no great trouble has been experienced on the water-race. Only one or two sections of the low fluming on sidling country have had to be attended to.”
