MINTED IN BRITAIN.
NEW BRONZE COINS. ARRIVE IN AUCKLAND. BRITANNIA IS MISSING. What is believed to be new types of bronze coins have made their appearance in the city during the past few days. Minted in England, the coins are pence and half-pence with the usual King's head on the obverse, and the customary lettering. It is the reverse that is a new departure. On this side is depicted an old-time sailing vessel, with the date below. Thus Britannia and her trident, so well-known to Britishers tho world over, has been displaced.
Apparently only one local bank has brought any of these coins into New Zealand. The Mahana brought between £SOOO and £6OOO worth of them recently, and they have just been opened.
Coppers only will be affected, as all silver coinage is minted overseas for N T ew Zealand use. Several of theso new coins may have been introduced by overseas tourists.
